Wooden Boxes

After I made enough pens on my lathe to last me a while I wanted to try something different. I also wanted to try out the new scrapers I bought. I had spotted a couple pieces of poplar about 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches square, about 16 inches long and very clean. They were part of a skid and they were getting tossed. This is what I made out of "garbage".

This is great stuff to practice on. The price is right, and if you mess up, who cares? I did this more on a whim than anything. I didn't have plans to go by. The basic proportions between the cap and base are 1/3 to 2/3 (roughly). Feel free to do yours however you see fit.

It was a good warmup for this one I did out of paduak I picked up at a woodworking show.

I wasn't too crazy about how this turned out. I should have never applied shella-wax to the raw wood. It's much too porous. If you look you can see where the wax turned white. My friend Yolanda liked it enough to take it off my hands though. I got a real education with paduak when I made a mounting block for someone.
